Making authentic choices can challenge societal norms, clash with family or cultural expectations, and even necessitate significant life changes. However, it is essential for living a fully expressed and genuine life.
Do you fear expressing your true self? What would you share with the world if you were free from expectations or the fear of judgment? To connect with our authentic selves, we must take risks. This may involve letting go of choices that no longer serve us, cultivating new relationships that better align with our values and purpose, or even reevaluating and updating past decisions and identities to move forward.
What Causes Many of Us to Live Inauthentically?
We might be living inauthentically due to our fears. We may fear rejection or failure, and feel pressured by family or cultural expectations to conform. In doing so, we often project a facade to the outside world.
Making these changes and choices can evoke a sense of fear that might feel so overwhelming that we retreat. It’s important to remember that while living authentically can be intimidating, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pursue it. In most cases, the benefits of embracing authenticity will far outweigh the drawbacks, leading to a stronger sense of identity and confidence, greater fulfillment, and even increased success.

Identify Your Fears
When embarking on a new life change or striving to embrace your authentic self, take a moment to close your eyes and notice the sensations in your body. How does fear feel, and where do you sense it physically? It might manifest as tension in your gut, a tight throat, or a constricted chest. Recognize and acknowledge how fear is presenting itself in your body.
Next, identify your fears. What are you truly afraid of? Is it the opinion of others, the possibility of losing relationships, or a fear of failure or success? Gaining clarity on your specific fears will help you understand what aspects you can control and what you can learn to release. Which of these fears are genuinely worth holding you back? Can you set aside these fears to take a step forward toward your authentic self and life?
